So Christina and I are trying the no TV thing in our house. (By no TV we mean no cable hook up, we have a TV to watch DVD's and things online.) Christina grew up without any TV for a lot of her childhood, so it's not too unusual for her. But as so many things are available online, it's really not a huge sacrifice. We don't waste time just sitting in front of the TV for hours, but we can still watch some shows. To be honest though, we don't regularly watch any current TV shows. We have a $10 antenna that gets CBS, Fox, and PBS if you set it just right, along with about 10 foreign language channgels. But we haven't actually used that lately. Mostly we just watch Seinfeld online (we have a hook-up from my laptop to the TV), find a show on Hulu, watch movies we own, or check-out DVD's from our library.
Our public library actually has a lot of TV shows on DVD. Not very educational, but pretty awesome. So earlier we watched a few seasons of Home Improvement. I'm also introducing Christina to some new shows. Right now we're watching Frasier--a show she didn't like much at first, but now she finds it very funny. Next up, we have Season 1 of The Cosby Show on hold. I really enjoy that show and think Christina will too. (I couldn't believe she'd never watched it!) They also have the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Which I think is a pretty funny show. I occasionally sing the theme song and Christina has no idea what it's from.
The major downfall of this is sports watching for me. I'm sure Christina likes it cause I'm not turning Sportscenter on almost every night. We do have access to ESPN3.com, so that makes it better as a lot of games are on there. And BYU moving to ESPN/BYU-TV we can watch any televised games online. But I have a friend with DVR and DirectTV. DVR may be the one thing that pulls us back, if that were to happen. I love the idea of recording a sports game and watching it much faster and not missing any cause I'm at work. But for now, we're doing well without TV.

i'm proud of you man. you don't need TV to be happy. it's nice to read sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI grew up without cable as well. I'm trying to convince my husband to give up sports!
ReplyDeleteHahaha, good luck with that one! Sports is Jordan's hobby...and without the cable it's not something that takes a lot of time, just another everyday relax period :)
ReplyDeleteOnce BYU's football season starts I see a TV coming back to your home!
ReplyDeleteJim, all the games that are televised so far are on ESPN (thus I can watch in online on espn3.com) and BYU-TV (which you can stream online too). And for any other games, that's what friends are for.
ReplyDeleteAnd as I mentioned in the post, I'm not watching it on a small computer screen. I hook the computer up to the television screen. The only downside is every so often it'll freeze up for a few seconds before it catches up again. That's rought at exciting moments. I still am not sure if it's my computer which is getting old or the internet.
